O νεοϋορκέζος DJ και μουσικός Moby (πραγματικό όνομα Richard Melville Hall, γεννήθηκε το 1966) ξεκίνησε από έφηβος ακόμη να παίζει μουσική σε διάφορα βραχύβια punk και hardcore γκρουπάκια, για να παθιαστεί στο δεύτερο μισό των '80s με το house. Αφού εξοπλίστηκε με τα απαραίτητα μηχανήματα, οργάνωσε ένα προσωπικό στούντιο και το 1991 έκανε το δισκογραφικό του ντεμπούτο κερδίζοντας φανατικούς οπαδούς στην underground χορευτική σκηνή.



Έκτοτε ξεκίνησε μια διαδικασία διαρκούς επαναπροσδιορισμού όλων των μουσικών στυλ που σκεπάζει η ομπρέλα της "χορευτικής μουσικής" (παρόμοιος ακτιβισμός χαρακτηρίζει και την προσωπική του ζωή καθώς είναι δραστήριος οικολόγος και φανατικός χορτοφάγος).
Καλύτερη δουλειά του εκείνης της περιόδου ήταν το "Everything Is Wrong" (1995), με καθηλωτικές εναλλαγές μπάσων δονήσεων, ανακυκλούμενων ρυθμών και μελωδικού trance που, σε συνδυασμό με την προσεγμένη παραγωγή και την αναλυτικότητα του ήχου, έδωσε αρκετές απολαυστικές στιγμές.
Με το "Animal Rights" (1996) άφησε οριστικά πίσω τούς ηλεκτρονικούς ambient παλμούς και τα techno σφυροκοπήματα κι επέστρεψε στα παλιά του thrash και hardcore punk λημέρια βρίσκοντας τον καλύτερο και πιο μαχητικό εαυτό του, ειδικά σε κομμάτια--γροθιές σαν τα "My Love Will Never Die" και "That's When I Reach For My Revolver".



Ακολούθησε το "I Like To Score" (1997), μια συλλογή με δώδεκα συνθέσεις του που χρησιμοποιήθηκαν στη μουσική επένδυση φιλμ όπως τα Heat, Scream, The Saint, Double Tap (το πρώτο του πλήρες σκορ) κ.ά.
Tο "Play" του 1999 ήταν μια δουλειά αργών, για τα δεδομένα του Moby, ρυθμών, όπου μπορούμε να διακρίνουμε τρεις αισθητικές ενότητες. Η πρώτη είναι ευθέως επηρεασμένη από ηχογραφήσεις μαύρης μουσικής των αρχών του αιώνα. Η δεύτερη μας παρουσιάζει τον Moby ως έμπειρο τροβαδούρο του 21ου αιώνα. Η τρίτη, τέλος, περιλαμβάνει τις ινστρουμένταλ συνθέσεις, οι οποίες ξεχωρίζουν για την ονειρική, κινηματογραφική αίσθησή τους. Σε αντίστοιχο ύφος κινήθηκε η νεότερη μέχρι στιγμής κυκλοφορία του "18" (2002), Hotel (2005), Last Night (2008).
