Metallica (Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal)

Οι Metallica είναι ένα Heavy Metal συγκρότημα από τις Η.Π.Α.. Ιδρύθηκαν τις 28 Οκτωβρίου του 1981. Με πωλήσεις 57 εκατομμυρίων άλμπουμ στις Η.Π.Α. (RIAA Total Sales), και 40 εκατομμύρια άλμπουμ εκτός των Η.Π.Α. το τελικό νούμερο των πωλήσεων φτάνει περίπου τα 100 εκατομμύρια δίσκους. Το συγκρότημα ειναι ενα απ' τα πιο επιτυχημένα heavy metal συγκροτήματα στην ιστορία ενώ γενικά κατατάσσεται 18ο, με βάση τις πωλήσεις, στην ως τώρα Αμερικάνικη μουσική ιστορία.

Αφου έπαιξαν σημαντικό ρόλο στην εξέλιξη της Heavy Metal μουσικής, ειδικά της Thrash Metal, (οι Μetallica θεωρούνται οι επικεφαλείς των "τεσσάρων μεγάλων" του Αμερικάνικου Thrash Metal, στους οποίους περιέχονται οι Megadeth, οι Slayer και οι Anthrax) στα μέσα της δεκαετίας του 1980, το συγκρότημα απευθύνθηκε σε ένα πιο πλατύ κοινό από τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1990 και μετά, αλλάζοντας τη μουσική του νοοτροπία, στρεφόμενο προς πιό Rock ήχους. Επίσης θεωρήθηκαν πρωτοπόροι στο Speed Metal με την κυκλοφορία του παρθενικού τους άλμπουμ,του Kill 'em All.


Τα μέλη του συγκροτήματος στην επίσημη ίδρυσή του το 1981 ήταν οι Τζέιμς Χέτφιλντ (James Hetfield - η ρυθμική κιθάρα και η φωνή του συγκροτήματος), Λαρς Ούλριχ (Lars Ulrich - ο ντράμερ του συγκροτήματος), Ντέιβ Μαστέιν (Dave Mustaine - ο σόλο κιθαρίστας του συγκροτήματος και μετέπειτα ηγέτης των Megadeth) και ο Κλιφ Μπάρτον (Cliff Burton - ο μπασίστας του συγκροτήματος). Το 1983 τα υπόλοιπα μέλη του συγκροτήματος έδιωξαν τον Μαστέιν και στη θέση του πήραν τον Κερκ Χάμμετ (Kirk Hammet).

Ωστόσο, στις 27 Σεπτεμβρίου 1986, ο Μπάρτον σκοτώθηκε σε αυτοκινητικό δυστύχημα στη Σουηδία. Ένα μήνα αργότερα, τη θέση του πήρε ο Τζέισον Νιούστεντ (Jason Newsted), o οποίος αποχώρησε το 2001. Ο σημερινός μπασίστας του συγκροτήματος είναι ο Ρόμπερτ Τρουχίγιο (Robert Trujillo).
