Tricky (Trip hop, Alternative)

Ο Andrian Thaws μετέπειτα TRICKY γεννήθηκε στο Bristol. Με τα δικά του λόγια: "Το Knowle West είναι το μέρος που γεννήθηκα. Είναι ένα λευκό γκέτο. Δεν ήξερα τι σημαίνει ρατσισμός μέχρι που έφυγα από εκεί. Η οικογένειά μου είναι μικτή φυλετικά κι έτσι δεν καταλαβαίνουμε από χρώματα. Μεγάλωσα σε ένα σπίτι ενός δημόσιου οικοδομικού τετραγώνου (σ.σ. αντίστοιxο των εργατικών πολυκατοικιών), περισσότερο ως λευκό παιδί αλλά με τζαμαϊκανές ρίζες. Όλοι μας όμως εκεί, είχαμε ένα κοινό... ήμασταν φτωχοί".

Ο TRICKY, αποτέλεσε μαζι με τους Massive Attack και τους Portishead τους τρεις βασικούς πυλώνες πάνω στους οποίους χτίστηκε στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 90' το trip hop στην πόλη του Bristol. Δεν είναι μια πραγματικά ευτυχής συγκυρία που το 2008 βρήκε δύο απο τα μέλη αυτής της σκηνής να επανέρχονται μετά από αρκετά χρόνια με δύο πολύ καλούς δίσκους; Ο TRICKY με το "Knowle west boy" και οι Portishead με το "Third".

Πίσω στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 80‘ και μετά απο μια περίοδο στενής συνεργασίας με τους Massive Attack ο TRICKY αποφασίζει να βουτήξει στα βαθειά στηριζόμενος στις δικές του αποκλειστικά δυνάμεις. Αποτέλεσμα η κυκλοφορία του θρυλικού ντεμπούτου άλμπουμ του με τίτλο Maxinquaye, εμπνευσμένο απο το όνομα της μητέρας του (Maxin Quaye) που αυτοκτόνησε όταν ακόμα ο TRICKY ήταν 4 ετών. Η ανακήρυξη του απο το NME σε album της χρονιάς δεν ξάφνιασε κανέναν, όπως και η υποψηφιότητα του για Mercury Prize την ίδια χρονιά.
Η σκοτεινή μουσική του TRICKY κατάφερνε με τον υπνωτικό ρυθμό της να ωθεί τους ακροατές της να χορέψουν και την ίδια στιγμή ο μεστός του στίχος να τους κρατά σε εγρήγορση με την επιλογή των θεμάτων του μέσα από την σκληρή καθημερινότητα με έμφαση στο ρόλο του ρατσισμού και τα προβλήματα που αφορούν την σεξουαλικότητα.
Τα επόμενα χρόνια ο TRICKY σε μεγάλο βαθμό προσπαθεί να ξεφύγει από τη βαριά κληρονομιά του "υπέροχου ντεμπούτου" και παραμένει ενεργός κυκλοφορώντας άλλους επτά δίσκους που κανένας όμως δεν φτάνει στο ύψος του μεγάλου τους αδερφού... Στο διάστημα αυτό παρουσιάζεται από τον τύπο σαν κακό παιδί, μπλέκεται σε καυγάδες αλλά και συμμετέχει σε πολύ σημαντικά project όπως το Post της Bjork, με την οποία θρυλείται ότι είχε συνδεθεί και συναισθηματικά.
Αλλά και ο κινηματογράφος συμπεριλαμβάνεται στις ενασχολήσεις του. Συμμετέχει σε ταινίες με πιο χαρακτηριστικό ένα ρόλο στο "Πέμπτο στοιχείο" του Luc Besson και τέλος δουλεύει σε έντονους ρυθμούς για την δισκογραφική εταιρεία που φτιάχνει την Brown Punk.
