Portishead (Trip hop, Electronic)

To Portishead είναι μια μικρή πόλη έξω απ' το Bristol και σ' αυτήν γεννήθηκε ο Geoff Barrow που από νωρίς άρχισε να συλλέγει soundtracks. Mετακόμισε στο Bristol όπου έγινε dj και ηχολήπτης σε studio, όπου και γνώρισε τις άλλες μορφές της πόλης, τους Massive Attack και τον Tricky. Το καλό όνομα που έφτιαξε ως remixer του έφερε συνεργασίες με Depeche Mode, Paul Weller, Primal Scream και Nenneh Cherry. Ψάχνοντας soul τραγουδίστρια για τη δημιουργία του γκρουπ, γνώρισε το 1991 την Beth Gibbons απ' το Devon, που προσπαθούσε να γίνει επαγγελματίας τραγουδώντας με τον Paul Webb των Talk Talk. Η πρώτη τους δουλειά ήταν το μικρού μήκους φιλμ To kill a dead man, στο οποίο εμφανιζόταν και είχαν γράψει και το soundtrack. Αυτό τους βοήθησε να υπογράψουν με την Go! Discs και με τη βοήθεια του jazz κιθαρίστα Adrian Utley και μερικών ακόμα μουσικών ηχογράφησαν το άλμπουμ Dummy που κυκλοφόρησε το 1994.

Η Beth τραγουδούσε με τη σοπράνο φωνή της, τους γεμάτους ερωτική μοναξιά και ενοχές στίχους της, και η ανατριχιαστική ομορφιά έκανε το Melody Maker να μιλήσει για μετενσάρκωση της Billie Holiday. Για background οι αλχημιστές μουσικοί, πρότειναν hip-hop και dub ρυθμούς, strings και keyboards, samples από κομμάτια των Isaac Hayes, War, Lalo Schifrin, Johnnie Ray και Weather Report και παράξενα εφφέ, δημιουργώντας ένα σκοτεινό και μελαγχολικό κόσμο που δεν ήταν ούτε σάουντρακ αλλά και ούτε και ροκ, όπως το είχαμε στο μυαλό μας. Acid cabaret το χαρακτήρισε κάποιος κι αυτό νομίζω είναι το πιο κοντινό στην τέλεια περιγραφή του ήχου τους.
Ο δίσκος ξεπέρασε τα δύο εκατομμύρια σε πωλήσεις κι αυτό τους προβλημάτισε, με αποτέλεσμα να αφήσουν να περάσουν τρία χρόνια πριν την επόμενη κυκλοφορία. Το ομώνυμο δεύτερο άλμπουμ δεν απογοήτευσε κανέναν. Είναι πιο σκοτεινό και ατμοσφαιρικό αλλά εξίσου μαγικό. Στο live album που ακολούθησε συμμετέχει μεγάλη ορχήστρα και δεν υπάρχει κανένα νέο κομμάτι.
