Dire Straits (Rock)

Οι Dire Straits σφηνώθηκαν σαν ένας αλλόκοτος αναχρονισμός στα τέλη της δεκατίας του '70 ανάμεσα στη φιλήδονη ντίσκο και το εξεγερτικό πανκ. Ηταν μια ρετρό μπάντα από τη Βρετανία που λάτρευε τα μπλουζ, ήταν επηρεασμένη από τον Ελβις, τον Ντίλαν και τους Everly Brothers και έπαιζε συνδυάζοντας το πάθος με την άψογη τεχνική. Κυκλοφόρησαν έξι άλμπουμ, με πιο πετυχημένο από όλα το ντεμπούτο τους («Dire Straits»). Διαλύθηκαν όταν ο Knopfler, τραγουδιστής και κιθαρίστας, αποφάσισε να ακολουθήσει μια προσωπική πορεία. «Ηταν η εποχή που οι Dire Straits γέμιζαν τα στάδια», διηγείται ο ίδιος. «Το άλμπουμ "Brother In Arms" πουλούσε παντού και τότε σκέφτηκα ότι ήρθε η ώρα να εγκαταλείψω την εικόνα του ροκ αστέρα και να εξερευνήσω τη μουσική».

Ο Knopfler στη μοναχική του διαδρομή ηχογράφησε άλλα έξι άλμπουμ, «μουσικά ταξίδια στην αμερικανική παράδοση», όπως τα περιγράφει. Και στα 58 του χρόνια βρίσκει ακόμα απολαυστικές τις συναυλίες. «Στην πραγματικότητα δεν υπάρχει λόγος να δίνω πια συναυλίες», εξηγεί. «Ομως μου αρέσει. Κάθε φορά που ολοκληρώνω μια δουλειά, το βρίσκω πολύ σημαντικό να την παρουσιάζω ζωντανά. Και όσο είμαι ικανός να στέκομαι δύο ώρες πάνω στη σκηνή σε ένα μέρος γεμάτο νέα παιδιά, θα το κάνω».
