Οι Joy Division ήταν ένα αγγλικό ροκ συγκρότημα που σχηματίστηκε το 1976 στο Salford (Greater Manchester). Αρχικά με το όνομα Warsaw (Βαρσοβία), το συγκρότημα κατά κύριον λόγο αποτελούταν από τους:

* Ian Curtis (φωνητικά και περιστασιακά κιθάρα),
* Bernard Sumner (κιθάρα και πλήκτρα),
* Peter Hook (μπάσο, κιθάρα και φωνητικά) και
* Stephen Morris (drums και κρουστά).



Οι Joy Division γρήγορα εξελίχθηκαν από τις αρχικές punk rock επιρροές τους στο σημείο να διαμορφώσουν έναν ήχο και ένα στυλ το οποίο πρωτοπόρησε στο κίνημα του post-punk στα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1970.
Παρά την αυξανόμενη επιτυχία της μπάντας, ο τραγουδιστής Ian Curtis είχε πέσει σε κατάθλιψη και αντιμετώπιζε άλλες προσωπικές δυσκολίες, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της διάλυσης του γάμου του και της διάγνωσης του για επιληψία. Ο Curtis έβρισκε ολοένα και πιο δύσκολο το να παίζει σε συναυλίες, καθώς συχνά είχε επιληπτικές κρίσεις κατά τη διάρκεια συναυλιών. Τον Μάιο του 1980, κατά τη διάρκεια της πρώτης αμερικάνικης περιοδείας της μπάντας, ο Curtis, κυριευμένος από κατάθλιψη, αυτοκτόνησε.

Δισκογραφία:

* Το αυτο-κυκλοφόρητο ντεμπούτο τους το 1978 με τίτλο An ideal for living τράβηξε το ενδιαφέρον της τηλεοπτικής προσωπικότητας του Μάντσεστερ, Tony Wilson.
* Το πρώτο τους άλμπουμ ως Joy Division με τίτλο Unknown Pleasures κυκλοφόρησε το 1979 μέσω της ανεξάρτητης δισκογραφικής εταιρίας του Wilson κερδίζοντας κριτικές επιδοκιμασίας από τον βρετανικό Τύπο.
* Το δεύτερο άλμπουμ των Joy Division το οποίο κυκλοφόρησε μετά το θάνατο του Curtis με τίτλο Closer, καθώς και
* το κομμάτι Love Will Tear Us Apart, κατέκτησαν τις υψηλότερες θέσεις στις προτιμήσεις του κοινού.



Μετά τον θάνατο του τραγουδιστή των Joy Division, τα υπόλοιπα μέλη του συγκροτήματος, ανασχηματίστηκαν με το νέο όνομα New Order, σημειώνοντας επιτυχία τόσο στις κριτικές όσο και στις πωλήσεις.
